25 January 2012 Azerbaijan declares end of era of political gas projects
Azerbaijan declares end of era of political gas projects
Gulmira Rzayeva, a fellow of the Center for Strategic Research (SAM) under the President of Azerbaijan, delivered speech at the V European Gas Conference in Vienna on the role of Azerbaijan in the development of the Southern Gas Corridor and energy security.
SAM reports that Rzayeva emphasized that time of political projects and huge financial costs for pipelines that was inherent to the projects of the Soviet period has passed. The crisis which began in 2008 contributed to the emergence of many less costly projects.
"The material and human resources intended for projects that bore the character of political show will be directed for pipelines of other scale for other producers and consumers," Rzayeva said.
The Vienna conference (24-27 January) has gathered 280 representatives from 27 countries.
Recently the U.S. announced that it had lost faith that gas pipeline project Nabucco will be a success in terms of the availability of investment resources and sources of gas.
